Summer Lane

(david m. bailey)
Butterflies are dancing, playing tag across the lawn
Lazy rooster speaks up though it's hours past the dawn
Dogs bark in the distance at a single engine plane
Just another day on Summer Lane

Trees look like a fortress, strong and wide and high
Jagged green horizon scraping the blue sky
Fair weather clouds whisper just a hint of rain
Just another day on Summer Lane

I make my bed now every other morning
I make my coffee strong enough to stain
I make mistakes every other minute
But I make my home on Summer lane

Peacock in the forest and the toad beneath the deck
Talk about the weather and I do not object
On this side of the mountain far from the fruited plain
Just another day on Summer Lane

I've seen all the palaces in Florence
Been to the castles on the Rhine
They all made me wan to to leave my house - but not this time
Gold finch sitting on the feeder
Gold sun shines like a refrain
Gold ring wrapped around my finger
Just another day on Summer Lane

I make my bed now every other morning
I make my coffee strong enough to stain
I make mistakes every other minute
But I make my home on Summer lane

Someday, I hope I'll be an old man
Moving slow, walking with a cane
I hope that rooster gets me up in time
To watch the sun rise over Summer Lane
