Day 28 The Map & The Gift

(david m. bailey)
December 15, 2008

Just when you think the fog has lifted
And the path that you are on seems so much clearer
Sometimes you find the sands have shifted
And you see you haven’t gotten any nearer
To the place you thought that you were going
The maps you have are often inconclusive
And it’s so hard to accept the not knowing
But you and I know knowing is illusive
That’s why God gave us a gift to keep
Though it’s a gift we too often reject
We don’t like the fact that faith requires a leap
We’d rather have a new map to inspect
But even the best map can get you lost
And it takes faith to trust what it’s portraying
And when I really think about the cost
I feel pretty confident in saying
I’d rather put my faith in the One who made the earth
Than in the one who simply draws the world we know
Yeah we still don’t know what the gift is worth
Until we need it – then it’s all we have to show
So tonight this map that I’ve been trying to follow
Is lying in pieces on the floor
What I’ve lost would be hard to swallow
Except I know the gift is worth much more
I can hardly wait to see what is in store
Yeah, this gig’s been good: imagine the encore.
