Day 22 Free at Last

This certainly has not been a walk in the park
Far too many hours found me crawling in the dark
Just when I thought I couldn’t take it any longer
The sun came up again and I knew I was getting stronger
Over and over I had to hurry up and wait
Ever answer seemed to come a little bit too late
The surgery was bigger than I thought that it would be
Last night the pain was so bad I just could not believe
I sheepishly admit I was a little bit insane
I screamed at the very folks who were trying to end the pain
I called them useless and incompetent and other nasty names
This morning I apologized and we were friends again
They tried to take me in a wheelchair until they saw I wouldn’t move
I said I’m leaving on my own 2 feet – I just gotta prove
They said Mr Bailey, don’t be crazy; you just had an operation
You can’t walk outta here – you are still under sedation
I said wrong again – I see the door, I’m outta here
I appreciate your concern – I’m not being cavalier.
But if ‘m here one more minute I’m afraid I’m gonna die
Yes, I’m the impatient patient – but it keeps my heart alive
Over and over I had to hurry up and wait
Every answer seemed to come a little bit too late
Today is now the day when I hurry up and go
Thanks again for everything – I am more grateful than you know
With that, I slipped my shoes on and whispered ‘no more talking’
Took the elevator downstairs and shouted ‘keep on walking!
